Sandro Pertini's 500 at the Liguria Regional Council

Presentation ceremony of the extraordinary exhibition of the Fiat 500 that belonged to the President of the Republic Sandro Pertini

On the afternoon of Tuesday 9 April 2024, the presentation ceremony of the extraordinary exhibition of the Fiat 500 that belonged to the President of the Republic Sandro Pertini was held in the “Cristoforo Colombo” Hall of the Liguria Regional Council in Via Fieschi in Genoa. The car, a red D from 1962, comes from the MAUTO – National Automobile Museum in Turin, where it usually makes a fine show of itself in a large room with the Mole Antonelliana and a map of the Piedmont capital.

The most beloved small car by Italians, which belonged to the most beloved President, arrives in Genoa with all its baggage of memories and meanings, naturally linked to the figure of Pertini (who was Ligurian and to be precise a native of Stella, in the province of Savona), but also to the small car, which has become a worldwide icon of Made in Italy.

The 500 is part of the commemoration of the 45th anniversary of Pertini's visit to the City and the Liguria Region, on the initiative of the Regional Council and the States General of Italian Heritage. The Fiat 500 Club Italia was also present with the founding president Domenico Romano, the Vice President Alessandro Vinotti, the National Councilor ASI Carlo Giuliani, Ugo Elio Giacobbe and Silvio Bertolotto, respectively curator and vice-curator of the Multimedia Museum of the 500 "Dante Giacosa" in Garlenda (SV), and some members.

During the ceremony, the founding president of the Fiat 500 Club Italia declared: “Pertini's Fiat 500 is here to underline our identity: it is a vehicle simple, genuine, inclusive and respectful of people: a car that loves to be more than to appear, just like the president.”

The largest model association in the world, which strongly desired the Museum dedicated to the historic twin-cylinder, could not miss this event, which underlines the importance of vintage cars, authentic “monuments on wheels”, witnesses of the evolution of engineering, design and above all of customs. The president of the General States of Italian Heritage, Ivan Drogo Inglese, himself defined the 500 “symbol of identity of historic Italian motoring” during his visit to Garlenda in February.
