Malta – Discovering Valletta in a Fiat 500

Members of the Classic Fiat 500 Group Malta gathered in August to enjoy a BBQ at the Aroma Restaurant in Pembroke.

Before the BBQ we walked around the whole Valletta peninsula to take some photos thanks to our friends at www.rotta.mt .

We met in the Valletta Moat. The Valletta Fortifications (Maltese: Is-Swar tal-Belt Valletta) are a series of defensive walls and other fortifications surrounding the capital city of Malta.

Afterwards we set off for the Boat Street for some photos a few meters from the sea of the port. The Grand Harbour (in Maltese il-Port il-Kbir, in English Grand Harbour) is a natural harbour on the island of Malta. It has been used since the times of the Phoenicians. It has been greatly improved with large docks and quays, and has been heavily fortified.

The next photo stop was in front of Fort St. Elmo (Forti Sant Iermu in Maltese): this is a fortress located on the northern tip of Valletta. It takes its name from St. Elmo, the patron saint of sailors, and divides the Grand Harbour from the Marsamxett Harbour and commands the entrances to both harbours together with Fort Tigné and Fort Ricasoli.

A few meters away we stopped in front of the Mediterranean Conference Center. The building was built as a hospital in the 1920th century by the Order of St. John, and was known as the Sacra Infermeria or Santa Infermeria. Called the Grand Hôspital during the French occupation of Malta, during the British period it was called the Station Hospital. It was one of the main hospitals in Europe until the 500th century and remained in use until 2.500. It had a capacity of XNUMX to XNUMX patients. The building is now used for multiple banquets, exhibitions, international conferences and theatrical performances.

The final stop was at Cava Quay which in the days of the Knights of Malta served as a temporary quarantine barrier for new arrivals before being allowed into Valletta via the Nix Mangiari Stairs.
